The explosion in Velipoja, the Prosecution launches the investigation

The prosecution launched investigations for the Velipoja event. Under investigation is the owner of the fire-place, Besnik Zejnunaj. The Technical Inspectorate also filed a lawsuit against him. The investigative group reports that gas leakage has come from tankers, which has provoked the explosion and spread of flames, while the bombs in the restorant have not exploded. The explosion happened on Friday around 10 am in a restaurant in the "Fishta" tourist resort in Velipoja. The massive flames were caused by gas leakage from tankers, in the restaurant's kitchen. The experts of the Technical and Industrial Inspectorate (TII) declared that the explosion was caused by a gas leak from a 1000-liter tank located in the building basement. "The experts entered the building's basement and verified the gas tank conditions. The 1000-liter gas tank was found intact, "TII reported. Some 20 people were injured, 4 of them seriously. Reports say that the owner of the restaurant and several kitchen staff remained wounded. The owner, Besnik Zejnunaj, 55, his son and two workers were urgently transported to the University Hospital Center by helicopter to Tirana due to massive injuries, for further medical care. Doctor Gjergji Belba informed the media that both patients have multiple burns in different parts of the body and their conditions are critical, specifikly the owner, which has received burns in about 40% of the body and his son. The other injured people were transported to Shkodra hospital and are currently out of danger. Luckily the 1000-liter gas tank located in the building's basement did not explode avoiding a tragedy. This story explosion generated panic among the tourists who were quickly evacuated by the firefighters, police and civil emergency services. Shkodra Prosecution is continuing the investigation about absence of security measures in the building.
