Romela Begaj makes history! She wins the first gold medal for Albania at a World Championship.


She shone! Albanian weightlifter Romela Begaj wins gold medal in World Weightlifting Championship at United States. This is Albania’s first gold medal at a World Championship in 45 years. The athlete 31-year old Begaj won two medas: competed for 69 kg and won golden medal in snatch, and second in the world for clean and jerk. Romela had a fierce competition against two Columbian weightlifters, winning gold medal. She was a champion of Europe and today she is a champion of the world. Another albanian weightlifter was very close to the podium with 69 kg, but Briken Calja had some health problems. He lost his senses. The Albanian sportsman stayed for several hours in hospital, and his situation is normalized. However Calja received fourth place with a total weight of 317 kg, 1 kg less than the third place. The 2017 World Weightlifting Championships are being held in Anaheim, United States from 28 November to 5 December 2017.
