President Bidens administration launches moves, foreign and domestic policy plan
The administration of the new President of the United States, Joe Biden, is eliminating the traditional difference between domestic and foreign policy when it comes to dealing with threats to the security of the country.
"Foreign policy is domestic policy and domestic policy is foreign policy," National Security Adviser Jake Sullivan told a virtual audience on Friday.
"We need to put ourselves in a strong position to be able to meet the challenges we face around the world," Sullivan said. "Right now, the most urgent national security challenge for the United States is to establish order within our country."
At first glance, the approach may seem similar to the national security strategy that former President Donald Trump unveiled just over three years ago, "America First."
But Sullivan explained the decision to stop categorizing threats as merely foreign or domestic as a necessity - a statement that many of the dangers facing the new administration know no bounds.
"We are facing a COVID-19 pandemic that continues to hit our population hard," he said. "Without a doubt, we are facing the effects of the climate crisis in every part of the country."
National Security Adviser Sullivan also said Mr. Biden's administration is concerned about how America's opponents are increasingly using Washington's domestic policy as an argument to gain ground on the global stage.
Despite these differences, Mr. Sullivan said the view of which countries pose the greatest threat to the United States is not very different from that of the Trump administration, listing China, Russia and Iran as some of the biggest challenges.
But he said the way to deal with these threats would be different
