A Albanian Football Federation statement issued Saturday called on Albania's government "to intervene within the legal context to stop extradition of Ismail Morinaj to Serbia."
Ismail Morina, the man who flew the drone on the “Partizan†stadium of Belgrade during the European qualifier between Serbia and Albania on October 14th 2014. The game was suspended, when a drone with an Albanian banner appeared over the pitch. Violence interrupted a European qualifying. Serbian fans injured some of the Albanian players who had tried rushing a Serbian player who pulled down the banner.
(AFF) publicly reacted over the Ballist Morina imminent extradition to Serbia “The AFF is fully committed to use all institutional and diplomatic paths and spaces to enable this case review. We are intensively dealing with this issue in order to find a solution that would prevent Morina’s extradition. Every opportunity is being carefully considered by the institution’s legal experts aiming the abrogation of the extradition verdictâ€, AFF reported.
The federation assured Morinaj's family it would keep fighting to prevent his extradition, saying it "is fully committed to exploiting all its institutional and diplomatic roads," the statement said.
The Albanian Justice Minister, Gazment Bardhi, too has appealed to the Croatian authorities to not extradite the citizen Ismail Morina to Serbia.
In the framework of the protection of the rights of the Albanian citizen Ismail Morina, he has received official emergency contact with the Croatian authorities, to argue from the standpoint of international law, the impossibility of extraditing him to Serbia.
Following the reaction of the Ministry of Justice, has come the reaction of other Albanian institutions on this issue.
Albanian Prime Minister Edi Rama has also contacted Croatian authorities to prevent extradition of citizen Ismail Morina to Serbia.
Morinaj, the 35-year-old Albanian, is from Kukes area, now lives in Italy. He is part of Albanian Red and black fans, so a group of fans, has called for an evening rally in Albania's capital, Tirana, to pressure the government to stop the extradition to Serbia of Morina, who has claimed to have flown a drone carrying a nationalist banner over a stadium in Serbia, a display that prompted fan violence. They think that Ismail's life would be in danger in Serbia.
Ismail Morinaj was arrested in Croatia in June based on an arrest warrant from Serbia. Morina was passing the Croatian-Montenegrin border when he was stopped by the Croatian authorities.
A court in Dubrovnik agreed this week to extradite Morina to Belgrade a decision that generated immediate reactions from the Albanian fans and the AFF.
