Albania under flames of Lucifer and the consequences of extreme temperatures


A killer heatwave, dubbed “Lucifer”, has involved for days southern and eastern Europe. Tirana, the capital of Albania, is one of them. The mercury showing 39-40 C in Tirana, the capital of Albania, for several days in a row. The heatwave has caused increase in hospital emergency admissions in some citys in Albania. Hospital and health centers have issued public health warnings. The extremely hot weather has brought a nationwide drought. The Albanian is nearly fully dependent on hydropower, and the level of many reservoirs, has dropped to record the lower levels. Almost 8o% of energy supply to the citizens comes from imports. This week Albanian Power Corporation raported the Fierza lake's level fell to 269 meters. This is the bigest and main dam in country. In this prolonged drought, power consumption has reached a record high due to the use of air conditioners. Only in July and August, Albanian Power Corporation, spent 52 million€ to import energy. If the drought continues, Albania will most probably have to import 100% of its energy very soon. But the damage is not only economic. Ecological disaster is part of the consequences of these extremely hot days. Temperatures still remained in 38-40 grade even 41 in some area in Albania. Because of heatwave, some regions facing the threat of drought and wildfires. Wildfires are seriously risking already even the lives of the citizens like in Elbasan district, where the flames out of control have forced the evacuation some families in this area. Several district in the country are suffering the devastating consequences of the big fires. Authorities in a number of turistic destinations in place are urging tourists to stay in the shade and carry water at all times.
