A new syndrome in children with coronavirus has been discovered
The New England Journal of Medicine reports the most complete report on this condition, known as multi-system inflammation syndrome in children. It is considered uncommon, and deaths are rare.
At least 285 children in the U.S. have had a severe inflammation associated with coronavirus, and while most are recovering, it is not known if this will leave any harm, according to two new studies.
About 1,000 children around the world have had inflammation caused by this syndrome, including cases in Europe, where they were first noticed.
The definition of a case includes current or recent coronavirus infection, fever, severe clinical condition requiring hospitalization, confirmed inflammation through the blood, and dysfunction of at least two organs in the body, including the heart, kidneys, lungs, skin, or nervous system. .
Symptoms of the digestive tract are also common, including vomiting and diarrhea.
Some children may have symptoms reminiscent of Kawasaki disease, a rare condition in children that can cause swelling and heart problems.
Most children diagnosed with the syndrome had coronavirus even though they were previously completely healthy.
The average age is eight years old, and it has not yet been confirmed whether this syndrome affects the elderly.
